Abstract: |
Herefordshire Archaeology undertook a survey which formed part of a pilot study undertaken in partnership with the Forestry Commission. A rapid walk over survey was carried out in Nash Wood using a hand held Global Positioning System to record the location of archaeological features encountered. Features were recorded within the wood that illustrate a long history of woodland management since at least the post medieval period, including the intensive use of woodland resources, e.g., charcoal burning platforms and holloways, and of mineral extraction including the quarrying of limestone. Of particular interest is the survival of a bank marking the national border between England and Wales, which may date to the medieval period. |
