Abstract: |
October to November 2004. Oxford Archaeology carried out a field evaluation of the Storage Lake area associated with the rowing course sited on the land north of Cambridge. A magnetometer survey was undertaken prior to the trenching evaluation and confirmed a complex of archaeology suggested by aerial photography in the southern most area. The evaluation consisted of forty-one trenches and showed two main foci of archaeological activity. The northern part of the evaluation area contained ditches, pits and postholes dating to the early and middle Iron Age. To the west, a few Roman features, mostly ditches were found. The central area of the site contained only occasional undated feature, mainly field boundaries. In the south of the site a high concentration of Roman features were found along with a sequence of organic deposits lying within the floodplain. |
