Abstract:
An archaeological and heritage desk-based assessment for proposed development at Farley Quarry. The study established heritage assets within the area, identified predicted effects (including upon the setting of designated assets) and proposed mitigation measures. Information sources included the Shropshire HER, Historic England, libraries and archives for published, cartographic and photographic data, and a site walkover survey of the development area. Sites recorded within the quarry boundaries were features and structures associated with previous limestone extraction and lime burning at Gleedon Hill, and primarily a former 'rail road' of earlier 19th century date and surviving workings, spoil heaps and a pair of lime kilns of mid- to late 19th century date. Proposed mitigation is centred upon the preservation in situ of the lime kilns, including detailed recording and consolidation.
