Abstract:
Pre-Construct Archaeology was commissioned to undertake an Historic England Level 1 building recording of the former bus maintenance workshop at Winchester Bus Station, 161-162 High Street, Winchester, Hampshire. The survey was carried out prior to its removal as part of a programme of proposed improvements to the bus station. Research has shown that plans for the omnibus station were first mooted during the early 1930s. The Omnibus depot was built as the Hampshire and Dorset Motor Services Bus Station. It was formally opened on Thursday 20th June 1935 by the Lord Mayor of Winchester, Councillor J. O. Hodder. The bus maintenance workshop, though built as a functional, utilitarian building, was at this time a 'modern' design, rejecting the classical and gothic influences of the previous century by adopting contemporary architectural motifs derived from the Art Deco movement, with its simple lines and associations with the Industrial Age and transport.
