Abstract: |
Assessment of an Archaeological Excavation at the Former Mardyke Estate, Rainham, London Borough of Havering RM13 8PS. Three mitigation excavation areas encountered natural terrace gravel and brickearth between 3.94m OD and 1.72m OD. Multi-phase prehistoric and Roman activity was recorded the earliest being a possible Early Bronze Age Beaker burial. Middle Bronze Age-Early Iron Age field systems and pits represented the next phase of activity. Roman activity began in the second half of the 1st century represented by field boundaries and ard marks. During the 2nd century Roman occupation was at its peak represented field boundaries enclosure ditches and pottery production, with three in situ pottery kilns recorded which were producing local sand-tempered, coarse-tempered and shell tempered wares. Roman occupation was over by the beginning of the 3rd century. 18th/19th century remains of the 'Mardyke Farm' represented on the 1st ed OS Map of 1867 completed the sequence. |
