Abstract: |
Extending South-east from the foot of the slope at the Northern edge of the quarry, Post-Medieval field enclosure ditches continued together with the continued trend of dispersed pits. One isolated pit included a Bronze Bracelet of Romano-British date together with well abraded pottery sherds. Other dispersed features included pits containing fire cracked stone with charcoal. Further south on the plateau, shapes forming the remains of partial post structures were observed within the plough truncated sand and gravel natural. Concentrations of pits were found including a shallow pit containing a rich charred grain deposit. C14 analysis of the seeds dated the pit to the late Bronze-age. The remains covered an area of approximately 0.35ha centred around the Ordnance Survey Triangulation point. East of the discreet features were the remains of two Romano- British enclosures showing the visible western arm of three phases including a continuous re-cut. The two enclosure ditches mark the eastern extent of the present site and covers a visible area of 500 square metres. Most of the enclosure is located under the existing top soil and is expected to be exposed when the top soil stripping resumes. At the direction of the Planning Archaeologist the exposed enclosure ditch area has been left in situ until then. The post Hole groups together with the possible Romano-British Farmstead enclosure could represent a possible continuity of a Hill Top settlement. |
