Northamptonshire Archaeology 12

Quarrying operations revealed three Iron Age enclosures and a complex ditch system; excavation concentrated on Enclosure E, which had an inset gateway, four round huts (ring-grooves) in at least two phases, an ?animal pen and twenty-four pits. Date: late pre-Belgic Iron Age; a tentative development sequence is offered and local comparanda noted. Pottery shows some evolution in form and small finds included a linchpin. Stock raising was the main activity. Nearby, a pit alignment and a timber-lined Anglo-Saxon waterhole were examined.

Ditches and circular timber buildings were succeeded (in late 3rd century?) by a circular building with stone foundations and an associated yard. A large group of pottery came from a pit of mid to late 3rd century date and there is also evidence to suggest ironworking. Coins, pottery including samian, small finds, prehistoric flints, building materials and animal bones are catalogued.
