Northamptonshire Archaeology 15

Discusses evidence for salt working (crude vessels, fired clay pedestals, etc) found in a Bronze Age ditch, compares it with similar material from Fengate nearby, and sets it in the context of Bronze Age settlement of the Fen edge.

Excavation located the Roman road from Towcester to the south, and produced some early military evidence and a sequence of later deposits including a possible public building of AD 75, associated in 2nd century with high quality table ware. A smaller stone building replaced it; later Roman finds were not associated with any structure. No further occupation until late medieval features and post-medieval clay pipe making. Many finds and animal bones.

The report examines and comments upon field names from some Cambridgeshire parishes. The comments are not intended to have any specifically archaeological relevance, although they may indirectly provide clues for the understanding of the Old English, Scandinavian and medieval culture of the area.
