Abstract: |
The works involved the total demolition of the central spine wall carrying all the in situ and historic fireplaces down to foundation level and the excavation of the entire historic basement to natural subsoil to form new concrete flooring and foundations for new steel framework to replace the lost fabric. The spine wall had survived the fire up to chimney pot level but was clearly in poor condition and was demolished by machine from a distance and by hand at lower levels. These works were monitored to recover as much detail about the former layout and construction of the spine walls. This was generally successful especially at lower levels. A great amount of detail was also recovered from the ground floor timber structure that survived the fire. The monitoring revealed four large original moulded sandstone fireplaces in situ behind later insertions and blockings, as well as several less well-appointed original fireplaces, the positioning of these possibly suggested early room use. In the basement the original kitchen was identified to the north-east and many associated kitchen fires and ovens with many phases of replacement were recorded. All of these were latterly lost behind a phase of conversion of the basement to a wine cellar. Excavations of and below the floors showed the brick and flagstone floor to be a secondary but early replacement with multiple phases of early drainage exposed below the flooring. These works have allowed a much greater understanding of the early phases of the building's life than was initially visible. This was especially the case in the basement, which showed multiple phases of drainage and flooring; a number of phases of reordering the basement; and the extensive and repeated upgrading or reordering of the kitchen area prior to a new kitchen being constructed in an extension wing and the basement being given over to a wine cellar. |
