Abstract:
In March 2014 Archaeology South-East (a division of the Centre for Applied Archaeology, UCL) carried out a historic building record of a former stable block at Woolshots Farm, Ramsden Bellhouse, Essex. The work was commissioned following a recommendation by the Conservation Officer of Basildon District Council for a level 3 historic building record prior to the demolition of the building, which had been rendered unsafe as a result of storm damage. The building is curtilage listed with the red brick Georgian farmhouse (Grade II). The farm was established in the 18th century but underwent two substantial remodelling phases in the early and later parts of the 19th century. The former stable block dates to the second of these, between 1839 and 1877. It is a fairly crude, vernacular-style timber-framed structure divided internally into various areas for stabling, loose boxes, coach house, etc. that stands within a predominantly modern farm complex. In recent years the structure has been used as a workshop, garage and other uses. The roof was replaced in the 20th century and the northern part, which suffered the most damage, was demolished after the storm. Apart from the 18th century house and two other 19th century farm buildings the stables are one of the few historic buildings to remain on the site. It represents a quite late vernacular building constructed from locally-sourced materials.
