Abstract: |
Archaeological monitoring works undertaken in respect of proposed works at North Barsalloch Farm, Port William, Newton Stewart, Wigtownshire (NGR: NX 34730 41998) (Figure 1). The proposed works comprise: erection of dairy parlour and general purpose agricultural building and formation of slurry lagoon and associated works (planning application no. 19/0845/FUL). The site of the proposed slurry lagoon development lies in an area of archaeological interest relating to cropmarks of unknown origin seen on aerial photographs taken by the then RCAHMS (now Historic Environment Scotland - HES) and recorded in Dumfries and Galloway Council Historic Environment Record (HER Ref: MDG23088). In addition the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1850 shows a mill pond with dam on the west side of the Barsalloch Burn, with a mill lade heading towards the thrashing mill at the farmstead passing through the area of the proposed new agricultural building. The groundworks for the dairy parlour and general purpose agricultural building would require ground-cutting to form a level footing and the formation of the earth-banked slurry lagoon would involve extensive downcutting. As the proposals involved fairly extensive ground breaking works which could uncover archaeological finds or features, Dumfries and Galloway Council required a programme of archaeological works to be undertaken as a condition of the issued planning consent. Dumfries and Galloway Council Archaeology Officer (Andrew Nicholson) provided guidance on the nature of archaeological works required. The majority of the works were carried out without the attendance of an on-site archaeologist with only the slurry contamination tank, subject to archaeological monitoring and although there was potential to uncover remains of a nineteenth century lade during these monitoring works for , no features or finds were observed. |
