Abstract:
In January 2020, Trent and Peak Archaeology was commissioned by Alex McIntyre Architects on behalf of Dr R. and Dr A. Steeves to undertake a historic building assessment and record of buildings at Poplar Farm, Leire, Leicestershire (centred on National Grid Reference SP 52548 89881). The work was undertaken in March 2020 and comprised a Level 2 survey of the building. The building at Poplar Farm is located on the east side of Little Lane, Leire, Leicestershire centred on NGR SP 52548 89881. The building forms the south range of an open courtyard and is orientated east- west, with the principal entrances to the building facing north into the courtyard. The main access is from Little Lane to the west. The building at Poplar Farm, Leire, represents a mixed-use agricultural range comprising a stable block and hayloft, with a collection of storage/workshop rooms and a possible frame-knitting workshop. The possible presence of a frame-knitting workshop would add to the significance of the building, as these are poorly documented outside of purpose-built frame-knitter's cottages. Further documentary research, including use of census returns, may be able to establish if this room was in use as a frame-knitting workshop.
