Abstract: |
This project was a community excavation at Waterloo Kiln, Swinton, South Yorkshire. The work was carried out as part of the Dearne Valley Landscape Partnership (DVLP), a HLF-funded 5-year programme of projects focussing on the historic buildings and landscapes of the Dearne Valley. The site is part of a Scheduled Monument, and Scheduled Monument Consent (SMC) was issued by Historic England (S00174130) in order for the work to be carried out. The work comprised the excavation of three trenches, specifically placed to gain a better understanding of structures related to the former pottery works that are depicted on historic maps. This works recorded the remains of a substantial stone-built structure and associated brick yard surfaces within Trench 1, which from historic map evidence indicate are likely to be the remains of workers' cottages. Trench 2 contained evidence of substantial demolition works, although a sporadic and partial cobbled surface was recorded. Trench 3 contained the remains of a brick-built kiln built off a brick floor surface. Historic map evidence suggests that this kiln was contained within a building. |
