Abstract: |
A series of five archaeological test pits were excavated at Broad Ing Plantation, Tankserly, South Yorkshire, over a three-day period in September 2018 by ArcHeritage and members of the local community. The work was carried out as part of the Dearne Valley Landscape Partnership (DVLP), a HLF-funded 5-year programme of projects focusing on the historic buildings and landscapes of the Dearne Valley. The site is known to have been used for the mining of ironstone from at least the mid-19th century. Numerous earthworks can be seen throughout the site, although relatively little is known about the scale of the mining and any associated activity that may have taken place. It was originally intended for the test pits to be spread throughout the wood, however due to severe inclement weather the test pits were ultimately clustered at the southern end of the wood, on higher, drier ground and close to shelter. Five test-pits were excavated in total, focused on a midden deposit containing abundant pot, bone and shell. Assessment of the finds recovered from the test pits indicate the dump accumulated throughout the 119th and 20th centuries |
