Abstract:
An evaluation was undertaken in advance of a residential development at 70-72 Newhaven Road, Edinburgh. This identified further fragmentary structural remains associated with the Paper Mill and the only features that could reasonably be identified as being earlier were the remains of the tanning tanks which were also found during the evaluation. Comparison with the map evidence provides a date range of mid 19th to early-mid 20th Century for all of the features identified. An archaeological strip, map and excavation was carried out. The programme of works followed on from mitigation measures which included a building appraisal and DBA, a standing building survey and watching briefs. The excavation identified the vestigial remains relating to a tannery complex and later Bonnington Paper Mills. Most of the identified remains can be directly related to the 1853 and 1876 OS Town Plans.
