Abstract:		 Due to the potential for the survival of sub-surface remains and artefacts relating to post-medieval and early modern settlement and mining, GUARD Archaeology Limited carried out a metal detecting survey and archaeological evaluation of a housing development area at West Edge Farm, Lang Loan. The artefacts recovered during the metal detecting survey included 14 coins, 10 buttons, three musket balls and three lead seals. The trial trench evaluation of 7% of the development area encountered a series of walls probably relating to the Carthall Hamlet, as well as rig and furrows and 12 possible coal pit mineshafts.
