Abstract:
An archaeological excavation of a small prehistoric cairn was carried out by Headland Archaeology (UK) Ltd at the Carscreugh Wind Farm development, Glenluce, Dumfries and Galloway. The excavation revealed a small stone cairn incorporating a rudimentary kerb of intermittent upstanding and recumbent stones with the partial remains of a single cremation burial sealed beneath the cairn. The centre of the cairn had a noticeable depression suggesting the cairn had previously been disturbed. At the base of the cairn was a shallow spread of burnt material that included small fragments of burnt bone and a large quantity of pottery fragments from a single vessel (a bucket-shaped urn) typically dating to the mid to late Bronze Age. A charcoal sample from the spread of burnt material associated with the pottery returned a comparable date of 1737-1532 calBC. A number of small stone-filled pits were also recorded below the cairn. The function of these was unclear. Whilst some may mark post-holes related to the cairn, others may represent the clearance of stones prior to the construction of the cairn.
