Abstract:
Specific items of built heritage were recorded , at or in the curtilage of Whitechapel Station to either a level 1 or level 2 in the EH specifications, prior to their demolition in advance of the station upgrade. Items recorded to level 1 were granite setts in Winthrop Street; the canopy over platforms 1 and 2; low level subways between platforms 1,2,3,4 and 5. Items recorded to level 2 were the staircase and timber foot bridge leading to the District Line platforms (built c 1901); the open East London Line platforms of 5 and 6 (created c 1913); the former Metropolitan and District Line booking hall (1884); the Woods buildings Footbridge; the pre-War main ticket hall; the late 19th century Durward Road Bridge (scene of the murder of Mary Ann Nichols by jack the Ripper in 1888) and the Winthrop Road Bridge. The Albion Brewery Well, originally located in the basement of the former brewery building, was recorded to Level 2 circular in shape, is formed of two sections lined with cast iron panels above a borehole well. The structure provided the water necessary to the production of beer, and is the penultimate surviving piece of equipment of the former Albion Brewery. The brewery opened at the beginning of the 19th century, but its first building was demolished and a new one was built in 1860-68. The brewery was closed in 1979.
