Abstract: |
A programme of 'strip, map and record' during the Phase 4 extension to the Dunhouse Quarry development near Staindrop in County Durham. The features comprised a potential early prehistoric pit, as well as two enclosures and two gullies of a likely later prehistoric date. One enclosure was originally formed by a palisade which was later replaced by a ditch. The second enclosure was potentially of sub-rectangular form. These prehistoric features were cut by a series of plough furrows that may have been medieval in date. Few artefacts were recovered, however, a part ceramic vessel of Early Neolithic or Late Bronze AGe/Early Iron Age had been placed near the palisade terminus. Additionally, the lower stone of an Iron Age beehive quern and a fragment from a Roman-period glass bangle were discovered |
