Abstract: |
Archaeological strip, map and record relating to a development at Havelock House, Bowes, County Durham (NY 9953 135) revealed evidence of settlement activity of Roman and Medieval to modern date. The density of features producing frequent artefacts of a Roman date showed that the area of development was sited within the bounds of the vicus of the Roman fort, with probable boundary ditches yielding evidence for domestic activity in the form of pottery, building materials and animal bone, as well as evidence for metalworking. The medieval and later settlement was attested by fragments of pottery ranging in date from the 11th to the 19th century, with a peak of activity within the area of development evident in the 14th to 16th centuries. |
