Abstract:
This report describes the results of archaeological monitoring carried out by Pre-Construct Archaeology on Land at The Maltings, Pirnhow Street, Ditchingham, Norfolk NR35 2RU (NGR TM 3411 9064) on the 8th May 2013, the 14th, 21st-23rd of July and the 4th September 2014. The archaeological work was commissioned by CgMs Consulting on behalf of the PJ Livesey Group on in response to a planning condition attached to residential development with associated services, foundation trenches and landscaping. The aim of the work was to characterise the archaeological potential of the site. The evaluation identified no remains of archaeological significance, it is likely this is due to post-medieval activity truncating the archaeological horizon, something which is suggested by the deep depth of made ground deposits present throughout the site area. This truncation likely relates to the development of the area into a silk works in the 19th century, before the site was repurposed into a Maltings and a U.S. Army depot in World War II.
