Abstract:
Watching brief carried out on a group of fourteen houses, with associated access road and service groundworks, within a larger housing development. Previous archaeological works had shown that the site lies adjacent to the Roman village of Navenby, on Ermine Street: Roman structures and burials had been encountered during watching briefs on earlier phases of this development. Three linear features and two pits were recorded during the watching brief, but no dating material was retrieved from any of them. Since the 1st edition OS map does not record any field boundaries in the neighbourhood of the site, a post-enclosure date for the linear features is unlikely, and they are also unlikely to be medieval, as the site lies at some distance from the medieval village: the most likely, although still hypothetical, interpretation, is that the linear features represent Romano-British field boundaries, lying to the rear of the known occupation facing on to Ermine Street.
