Abstract:
The project comprises an analytical historic building record (HBR) of the Tors Hotel, Lynmouth, Devon. Conditional planning permission has been granted to redevelop the existing hotel involving the creation of 31 apartments together with incorporation of three previously converted apartments and includes demolition. The HBR involved documentary research, a visual inspection of the building and photographic and metric surveys (plans and elevations) to inform and illustrate a written account of the site. The property is a late 19th century hotel constructed by a local builder and developer William Bevan. It opened in 1886, at which time it was known as the Tors Park Hotel. The building was rapidly extended and altered several times including the expansion of the first floor and a second storey added by 1913 and the extension of the north-west tower to four-storeys high by 1922. A major reorganisation of the entrance lobby happened in the late 1960s. More recently the hotel was owned by Martin Miller the founder of Miller's Antique Guides. It closed in 2015 and the north-east four-storey tower has been refurbished as residential apartments.
