Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology (WA) commissioned by British Solar Renewables undertook an archaeological trial trench evaluation on land at Blenches Mill Farm, Westbury, Wiltshire from 23 to 27 September 2013, centred on National Grid Reference (NGR) 386775,152800. The archaeological trial trench evaluation comprised the excavation of fifteen 50m x 2m trial trenches and one 30m x 2m trial trench within the available 8ha area of the site, (2% of the available area) were targeted on geophysical anomalies and also provided a small sample of blank areas. The evaluation identified a small number of ditches and pits across the proposed development area confirmed the nature of anomalies identified in the geophysical survey as well as a generally low potential for the presence and survival of archaeological features and deposits. The majority of the recorded features are thought to date to the pre-historic period and indicate a general background of activity that may relate to agricultural practises and/or settlement in the wider vicinity of the Site. Three shallow Early to Middle Bronze Age pits were identified in the northwest part of the Site along with a ditched Late Bronze Age / Early Iron Age enclosure to the southeast. No definite evidence of Roman activity was identified, however a series of four ditches in the south of the Site contained one small, abraded sherd of possible Romano-British pottery. A dense series of parallel linear's in the southern area of the site were discovered to relate to heavy quarrying and landfill undertaken relatively recently.
