Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Peter Wadley Architects to carry out an archaeological evaluation on land to the rear of Holinser House, 2 The Grove, Ealing, London W5 5LH, located at NGR 517750 180390. The evaluation was carried out pursuant to a condition of planning permission for development of the Site granted by the London Borough of Ealing. The evaluation was carried out on the 27th and 28th April 2010. The evaluation comprised the machine excavation of one 10m x 1.8m trench located in the garden at the rear of Holinser House, aligned approximately east to west. Beneath the topsoil were three distinct layers of made ground that consisted of dark brown silty clay mixed with modern rubble building debris. Natural brickearth was reached at a depth of 1.07m. A possible palaeochannel on a north to south alignment was revealed at a depth of 1.0m below ground level. A section through it revealed no archaeological deposits or artefacts. No archaeological features, deposits or finds were revealed by the evaluation and it is concluded that the Site has little or no significant archaeological potential.
