Abstract: |
The 2016-17 excavations were undertaken between September 2016 and February 2017 as part of the fourth mitigation phase at Hanson's Over/Needingworth quarry. The project was undertaken in response to Hanson's application for mineral extraction within the current target area and a request from Cambridgeshire County Council Historic Environment Team for archaeological investigation. Work was undertaken in seven areas defined following archaeological evaluation in 2012 and subsequent open-area excavations in 2015, and included geoarchaeological and landscape history investigation - particularly targeting the development of the prehistoric/historic Willingham Mere - as well as open-area excavation. Seven archaeological 'phases' were identified dating to the Early Neolithic (Mildenhall pottery) Middle Neolithic (Peterborough Ware) Late Neolithic (Grooved Ware), Early Bronze Age (Beaker), Middle Bronze Age, Iron Age and Post-Medieval periods. The Early, Middle and Late Neolithic remains mainly comprised pit clusters of which 12 were recorded. Made up of between three and ten features, individual pits yielded assemblages of Mildenhall type and Peterborough Ware pottery and worked flint. Beaker/Early Bronze Age remains comprised further pits as well as a series of post alignments - one over 40m in length - and a Middle Bronze Age field system represents a continuation of a system recorded in previous excavations. A discrete area of Iron Age activity, almost certainly associated with Willingham Mere, which appears to have developed during later prehistory, was also recorded and comprised three postholes one of which contained a deposit of clay loomweights. Finally, Post-Medieval activity focussed on former ditches recorded on historic maps and included areas of wooden revetment along ditches-lines; finds included two stone fishing weights. |
