Abstract: |
A watching brief during groundworks covering a section of the proposed Middlehaven Urban Park North, lying between Commercial Street and Vulcan Street, in Middlesbrough, Teesside. Middlehaven Urban Park North overlaps the site of the Middlesbrough Pottery. The pottery was established in 1834 on the south bank of the Tees, and had closed in 1882. Study of the Second Edition Ordnance Survey mapping shows that the buildings of the site were taken over by the 'Atlas Steel Hoop and Wire Rod Works' by 1889. The development area also impacted on the site of a sail loft, believed to date to 1835. The principal find on the site was the discovery of a pottery kiln, which measured c7m in diameter. This was one of at least six kilns which probably existed on the site; the remains of one other kiln were partially uncovered during the excavation works, but lay below the required levels and were reburied. The kiln had ten stoke-holes or firemouths, and large quantities of saggers and waster pots were also identified associated with the kiln. The walls of associated buildings, including the thrower's and turner's shops, and a warehouse, were also uncovered, and sufficient was recorded to be able to establish the original layout of the pottery. The development of the Atlas Works appears to have had little additional impact on the pottery other than the removal of some specific buildings (mainly the kilns), with the remaining buildings later subsumed into a much larger factory. The buildings were demolished in the later 20th century and replaced with large modern warehouses, the stanchions for which were seen during the excavations. The sail loft, which had developed independently of, and adjacent to, the pottery, was also excavated. The excavations identified that the ground floor had been used for the stalling of horses; later this was converted to a garage. It seems probable that any sail-making activity was confined to the upper floors. |
