Abstract:
The South Manchester Archaeological Research Team (SMART) planned to conduct a community based Heritage Lottery Funded (HLF) archaeological community excavation and geophysical survey at Dunham Massey, a National Trust property located three miles south-west of Altrincham, in the Metropolitan Borough of Trafford. This was to be preceded by archaeological training workshops at Dunham Massey Village Hall. Oxford Archaeology North were invited to provide archaeological training workshops over a two day event, covering both desk-based assessments and archaeological excavation and to supervise the following excavation and provide on site training for the volunteers undertaking the work. The training workshops took place on the 10th and 11th of July at Dunham Massey Village Hall. The following community excavation and geophysical survey took place between the 19th and 30th of the same month. The primary aim of the project was to provide a community archaeological excavation, in which members of the local community would undertake under appropriate supervision. In addition, the work aimed to assess the impact of the surrounding trees on the archaeology, and the potential impact of ground works should some of these trees need to be removed. This excavation and geophysical survey were undertaken as part of other archaeology-themed events taking place within Dunham Massey's Old Park during the same two week period. The results of this work demonstrate that, with the exception of the eastern part of the site where the archaeology is relatively shallow, much of the archaeologically significant deposits are at some depth.
