Abstract:
A rapid archaeological survey and assessment in advance of peat restoration works on Blubberhouses Moor, North Yorkshire. The project area comprised approximately 3.9km² of upland landscape. A total of 24 heritage assets were surveyed, most of which were previously recorded in the HER. Some sites were newly discovered, however, and this has expanded the existing knowledge and understanding of the archaeology of this area of moorland. The overwhelming majority of the archaeology was prehistoric in date, and comprised findspots of Mesolithic flint, a Bronze Age cup-marked stone and an Iron Age settlement. A number of post-medieval sites related to extraction (sandstone quarrying) were also identified. The moor is crossed by the Watling Street Roman Road, and care should be taken in the course of any works which require contractors to cross this.
