Abstract:
Archaeological excavations and historic building recording were undertaken by AC archaeology between September and October 2019 on land north of Stratton Road, Bude, Cornwall (NGR SS 2231 0630). Previous archaeological investigations on the site comprising a geophysical survey and two phases of archaeological trench evaluation, had established the presence of a ring gully within the northern part of the site and two clusters of postholes on the higher ground towards the east side which indicated evidence for Bronze Age settlement. The investigations comprised three open area excavations and detailed recording of the agricultural buildings that were subsequently demolished. The main findings comprised the discovery of a pit containing a rare Early Neolithic cremation deposit dated by the radiocarbon method, a cluster of Middle Bronze Age postholes/pits and a Later Iron Age roundhouse represented by a ring gully. Some limited further prehistoric activity was exposed, while the remaining archaeological features were mainly undated, ephemeral or represented post-medieval former field boundaries. The historic building recording established that all of the five buildings were constructed for agricultural purposes and that the oldest buildings date to after 1842, with the remainder constructed in the 20th century. The buildings have been largely unmodified since their construction but had fallen into disrepair in the 21st century.
