The works were contained within a field under pasture and identified residual traces of regular furrows which may have been part of the ridge and furrow open field system levelled by modern plough and now under grass. A report on archaeological observations, investigations and recording at the A1 lay-by and the area to the east (Boat Field) of the Roman town of Durobrivae, Chesterton, Cambridgeshire
S. Upex
An archaeological Watching Brief was carried out on the line of new security fencing along the southern side of Boat Field, Chesterton (TL19 125967). The area was potentially very sensitive as it lies just to the east of the Roman town of Durobrivae where there is evidence of Roman building and cemeteries. The work was commissioned by Mr. Robin Waterworth, the landowner, and English Heritage. The site is a scheduled ancient monument. The fencing was held in position on a series of metal posts set into the ground. These posts were in part set in hand dug post holes and in a continuous trench dug by mechanical digger. Only the topsoil was removed by the digger and observations recorded on the underlying features. Following scheduled monument consent for the installation of a fence at Boat Field, Cambridgeshire (CHER 09107) a number of probable Roman features were recorded in a narrow trench including pits and ditches, buildings evidence including walls and floors and possible evidence of a road, tentatively associated with Ermine Street.
