North Lanarkshire Council, commissioned WSP to undertake an Archaeological Desk Based Assessment (ADBA) in advance of a phase of Ground Investigation (GI) for a proposed site suitable for new build housing development. This document identified the likely types of archaeological remains which may be encountered, if existing, and the impacts of the GI work within the Site on the archaeological resource. The desk based assessment has identified no significant built surface remains within the boundary of the Site. Several assets have been identified which are located close to the Site, however due to the lack of direct impact from the development or construction activities, these are unlikely to be affected.

A phase of archaeological mitigation work was undertaken in support of Ground Investigation (GI) works within the site of the former Guildiehaugh Depot, Bathgate. This archaeological work was undertaken to establish the presence, extent and nature of any significant archaeological remains that may have existed within the Site boundary. An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during ground-breaking work associated with GI test pitting and boreholes across the site to support any subsequent planning submissions. During the monitoring it was noted that the site stratigraphy predominantly consisted of varying depths of redeposited ground directly overlying either natural gravels, sands or clay; concrete or deep deposits of built up material. No archaeological features or deposits were encountered or observed during the monitoring work

This document will identifies the likely types of archaeological remains, if existing, which may be encountered within the Site, and the impacts of the GI work on the archaeological resource. As identified through Historic Map Regression and aerial images, the majority of the Site has remained relatively undeveloped with the Site currently occupied by modern play park to the south and a large grassy area that was a former playing field to the north. The eastern extent is occupied by a small clubhouse and the construction of this building and the playgrounds may have had a detrimental impact on the potential for the survival of the archaeological resource. The south-eastern section of the Site formerly contained part of Old Bellshill Village. The demolition of the village in the 19th century and subsequent re-development in the 20th century including shopfronts and the playground, would have had a damaging impact on the potential for survival of the village structures. However, there is a potential for remnants of these to survive as sub-surface remains in the form of possible foundations or remnants of field systems further from the road. The other undeveloped areas also have the potential to contain remains of previously unknown archaeological assets. The high density of potential Medieval activity in the surrounding area and the nearby Prehistoric artefact suggests that there is the potential for the discovery of previously unknown archaeological deposits

The potential for the survival of archaeological remains within the Site boundary remains low. Previous development and disturbance on the eastern portion of the site will likely have had a detrimental impact on the potential for the survival of the archaeological resource. This includes structures and landscaping built and undertaken in the 1970's with the addition of a pavilion, structures and a football pitch. It is likely that levelling associated with the construction of these facilities will have impacted on the potential for survival of any subsurface interface. Bog Stank Burn which currently runs parallel with the southern edge of the Site boundary, appears to have been altered to run adjacent to the current Old Glasgow Road. It is also likely that the re-alignment of this small watercourse, would have impacted on the potential survival of any sub-surface archaeology. The current lack of assets listed within the SNRHE does not indicate a lack of known human activity across the wider area and as such, the potential for unknown remains still exists. It is anticipated that the Site will have been impacted on previously by construction practices and development and as a result, the potential for archaeological deposits surviving intact is therefore deemed to be low.
