Series: Tees Archaeology unpublished report series

A Bronze Age burial mound stands at the north-west corner of the Upleatham Hills. A loose cup marked boulder was identified within a small quarried area to the north of the mound in 1999. It is presumed that this has eroded from the mound or has been removed in an unrecorded 19th or early 20th century excavation. In May 2007 the stone was reburied within a hollow at the summit of the mound by a team comprising members of Redcar and Cleveland Countryside Service and Tees Archaeology.

This report describes the methodology and results of an archaeological excavation undertaken by Tees Archaeology Research and Fieldwork Section at 2 Roseberry Crescent, Norton, following the discovery of human remains by builders. The site is centred on National Grid Reference NZ 44869 22300. The fieldwork was undertaken in April 2007. The site consists of the front and side garden of a domestic semi-detached house constructed circa 1949. Human remains were discovered by builders whilst excavating foundations for a new conservatory, porch and inspection chamber. The archaeological excavation comprised the partial investigation of five skeletons found in situ along with the recovery of charnel from spoil heaps and other disturbed deposits. The amount of bone recovered suggests a long-lived cemetery rather than a discrete collection of burials. The site is currently undated but would appear to fit the Christian burial traditional being oriented east to west and with no grave goods. It is recommended that radio-carbon dating is carried out along with specialist assessment of the human remains.

The excavations at Dalton on Tees were funded by the Heritage Lottery through the River Tees Rediscovered Project. Tees Archaeology worked with local people and volunteers to investigate earthworks around the village and to look at the way the village of Dalton on Tees changed over time. Three trenches were excavated to investigate the form, function and extent of earthworks previously identified during previous excavations in 2016.

The report presents the results of excavations that took place from 12th-24th June 2017. Five trenches were excavated across the site.

Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council is considering re-establishing the Kitchen Garden and in conjunction with Tees Archaeology it was felt that archaeological work in the garden area would provide useful information to inform such a scheme. This would also provide an opportunity for local people and local schools to take part in archaeological work and raise awareness of the garden. The report comprises a desk-based assessment of the site including available maps; a summary of a geophysical survey undertaken by Durham University; and a an excavation report including a list and discussion of the finds.

The recovery of human remains during excavation for a new domestic drain connection necessitated archaeological monitoring. The work took place in July 2009 and was monitored by Peter Rowe. The human remains were charnel recovered from a re-deposited fill connected to the construction of the house circa 1833. The remains are likey to form part of the Cross Close Anglo-Saxon Cemetery established in the mid 7th century AD.

Archaeological monitoring was maintained during the excavation of the service trench relating to the new lighting installation (see Figure 2). Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council wish to upgrade the current external lighting scheme for the building

Partial archaeological survey of earthworks in the north - east part of Little Stainton village

A Community Archaeology project was established with the Friends of Fairy Dell using Heritage Lottery funding. The project began with a series of historical research workshops to identify archaeological features within Fairy Dell, followed by archaeological excavation of a medieval sunken lane. The project ended with a well attended Medieval Festival.
