Series: Lincs Archaeo-tech unpublished report series

The site lies at the north-west corner of Middle Rasen in a part of the village originally known as Middle Rasen Tupholme, approximately 200m to the west of the church of St. Peter and St. Paul. The site comprises an area of land measuring approximately 33m (N-S) x 20m (E-W). It originally formed part of the garden of 'Sunnydene' and is bounded by North Street to the south, and by existing properties to the remaining sides. Planning permission was granted by West Lindsey District Council for the construction of a pair of semi-detached residential properties, revised site access, driveway and parking/turning area, and a detached garage for 'Sunnydene'. The consent had a condition requiring the implementation of a programme of archaeological work, and an archaeological brief produced by Lincolnshire County Council (LCC) Historic Environment Team in April 2009 specified that this should entail the monitoring of all topsoil stripping in the areas of the access road, parking spaces and foundations. Any requirement for subsequent work on the site would then be dependent on the results of this investigation. Lincs Archaeo-tech carried out the required archaeological services on an intermittent basis between the 30th of April and the 5th of May 2009. During the course of the investigation a series of buried deposits was uncovered and recorded in accordance with the aims and objectives established at the outset of the project, but in spite of the site's apparent archaeological potential, the results unfortunately provided no evidence whatsoever for ancient occupation.

The Grade II-listed former Harvest Moon public house dates from the 18th century, and was originally a farmhouse known as Bunkers Hill Farm or Glebe Farmhouse. It is situated on Glebe Park, a modern estate built from the late 1960s, and is bounded by Wolsey Way to the south, existing properties to the west, and an area of parkland to the north and east. It has a single-storey rearward extension, with a detached former barn located along the rear boundary of the site. Having stood unused since c. 2007, however, the buildings are currently in poor condition with fire damage to the roof of the main building. Development proposals involved new-build construction or conversion of existing structures to form nine dwellings. Planning consent granted by City of Lincoln Council on the 6th of February 2014, required that groundworks for the five new dwellings were monitored and recorded archaeologically. Site attendance was undertaken between the 14th and 24th of February 2014, and a variety of buried archaeological deposits and features were recorded. The results provided no evidence for ancient occupation, however, with all material being instead either of natural origin, undated, or of late 19th to mid 20th century provenance.

The site lies close to the centre of Tetford, Lincolnshire, and encompasses an area of former pasture covering approximately 700 square metres. Planning permission was granted by East Lindsey District Council for the construction of a bungalow with attached garage, new vehicular access and services. Lincolnshire County Council Conservation Services noted that the site lies close to the line of a former Roman road, with Roman pottery found in the immediate vicinity. The site of a medieval watermill is also thought to lie nearby, while the remains of a medieval moated site and settlement are present to the north and north-east. In view of this, ELDC requested that an archaeological watching brief be carried out in conjunction with the development groundworks, and LAT was commissioned by the developer, Louth Building Services Ltd., to provide the required archaeological services. Attendance was undertaken between the 31st of October 2006 and the 30th of January 2007, but in spite of the site's apparent potential, no evidence for ancient occupation was revealed in the areas investigated. The deposits that were uncovered appeared to have lain undisturbed for a considerable period of time, and it seems probable, therefore, that the site has been used simply as pasture for many generations. Anecdotal information gleaned from local inhabitants also suggests that the site was subject to periodic deliberate flooding in order to provide a sufficient reservoir of water to power a watermill to the east of the site, which might have also contributed to its preservation.

The village of Manby is situated in the Lincolnshire district of East Lindsey, approximately 5.5km to the east of Louth. The development site lies in the northern half of the village (originally part of the former RAF Manby) and originally formed part of the garden of 2 Provost Road. It is bounded to the north, east and west by existing residential properties and by Provost Road to the south. Planning permission for the construction of a detached house with integral garage was granted by ELDC with a condition requesting that an archaeological watching brief be carried out in conjunction with the groundworks. Lincolnshire County Council Conservation Services reported that a number of previous archaeological discoveries had been made in the vicinity of Manby, ranging from individual artefacts to evidence of settlement remains and earthworks, representing possible activity dating from the late Iron Age, Roman, medieval, and post-medieval periods. While there was no record of any archaeological discoveries on the site itself, it was still considered possible that the development might reveal important archaeological evidence. Lincs Archaeo-tech was commissioned by the developer, Louth Building Services, to provide the required archaeological services, and attendance was carried out between the 12th and 14th of November 2007. While the investigation successfully secured an archive record of all buried deposits exposed by the development (in accordance with its original remit), the results unfortunately provided no evidence for ancient occupation on the site.

The village of North Kelsey lies in the Lincolnshire district of West Lindsey, approximately 14km north-west of Market Rasen and 7km south-east of Brigg. The site comprises a parcel of land with an area of approximately 830 square metres, bounded by South Street to the south, and by residential properties on the remaining sides. All Hallows parish church lies approximately 200m to the north-east. At the time of the application, the site was occupied by a small bungalow ('Ashleigh') and associated outbuildings, with the rest of the site laid to gardens and allotment. Planning permission was sought for the demolition of these structures, and the construction of a new 3-bedroomed detached dwelling with an integral annex. Lincolnshire County Council Conservation Services advised that the site probably lay within the former medieval settlement of North Kelsey and recommended that a watching brief be carried out in conjunction with the development groundworks. Full planning consent was granted by West Lindsey District Council in May 2006 with a condition requiring the implementation of a programme of archaeological works. Lincs Archaeo-tech was commissioned by the owner/developer, Mr L. Waghorn to carry out the required archaeological services, with site attendance subsequently undertaken on the 12th of June 2006. Unfortunately, while the investigation was successful in securing an archive record of the deposits and artefacts threatened by development, it did not ultimately uncover any archaeological evidence for ancient occupation on the site, instead revealing only deposits of either recent or natural (i.e., geological) origin.

Cuthbert's Yard lies to the west of Burton Road, close to Lincoln's historic core. The 'yard' itself was originally part of a farm, but is currently used as the site for rented 'lock-up' garages, multiple-use workshops, a motor repair garage, and a car sales business. The present owner is in consultation with City of Lincoln Council regarding possible redevelopment on the site involving the demolition of the existing buildings, and the construction of a multi-storey apartment block and single detached house. The site lies within an area of known archaeological importance immediately to the west of the defences of the Roman upper city, and is thought to probably overlie the western side of the defensive ditch. On the site itself, surviving buildings associated with the farm constructed in the mid-late 1800s, are considered to be of particular local historic interest. In view of this potential, two trial trenches - each measuring nominally 5m x 1m - were excavated to investigate any surviving archaeological deposits. Both trenches revealed part of a large ditch cut - possibly the edge of the Roman ditch - along with other later deposits and features, the latest of which were visible in section at a depth of c. 400mm below the existing ground level. Artefacts recovered from both stratified and unstratified contexts generally suggested a post-17th century date for the majority of this activity, although pieces of 12th to 13th/15th century roofing tile and a few fragments of Roman pottery or tile were also retrieved.

Church View House stands in the village of Kirkby-cum-Osgodby, in the Lincolnshire district of West Lindsey, approximately 5km NW of Market Rasen and 25km NE of Lincoln. Planning Permission for the replacement of two existing structures with a new range of outbuildings was granted by West Lindsey District Council (WLDC) on 24/01/2006, with a condition (on advice from Lincolnshire County Council (LCC) Conservation Services) that an archaeological WB be carried out during development groundworks. Lincs Archaeo-tech (LAT) was commissioned by the owners, Mr and Mrs Johnson, to provide the required archaeological services, with attendance initially undertaken on 16/05/2008. Unfortunately, it was not possible to complete all the groundworks at this time, and the project was then put on indefinite hiatus. In mid 2010, the client expressed a desire to restart construction, but in view of the length of time elapsed since the initial observation, WLDC/LCC Conservation Services requested that an interim report be produced before any further work commenced (LAT Archaeological Report No. 38; July 2010). The final groundwork was eventually undertaken on 12/06/2012. In the course of the excavation, six stratified deposits and seven linear cut features of indeterminate date were revealed, together with a large rubbish pit, a possible drain and a brick-built well of relatively recent date. Unfortunately, while the presence of the cut features indicates some form of activity in antiquity - most likely agricultural - a complete lack of dating evidence from any of the buried deposits makes further interpretation very difficult.
