Archaeological desk-based assessment

The watching brief revealed the stubs of two un-mortared, undated masonry walls underlying the existing boundary walls of the adjoining building, and 19th-century made ground deposits.

Archaeological watching brief revealed no archaeology on the site.

Archaeological Monitoring (Watching Brief) An archaeological watching brief was carried out by Bristol and West Archaeology during excavations to provide a new footpath from the Wellow building, within the grounds of the Bath Spa University. The site lay within the Grade II* Registered Park and Gardens of Newton Park, including elements of the Grade I Listed Building and Scheduled Ancient Monument of Newton St. Loe Medieval Castle. Groundworks comprised the excavation of a strip of topsoil up to 200mm deep the west, part of which was found to overlay the course of an earlier footpath. No deposits or features of archaeological interest were observed during the works.

Archaeological Monitoring (Watching Brief) during excavation of two adjoining reduced level platforms for a one and two storey extensions revealed a simple sequence of topsoil and subsoil overlying archaeologically sterile clay of geological origin. Within this a concrete floor surface and a modern rubbish pit were the only recorded features.

A programme of controlled archaeological monitoring (watching brief) was carried out by Bristol and West Archaeology at Pear Tree House, Water Street, East Harptree, Bath and North East Somerset. During the monitoring groundworks comprised the excavation of adjoining reduced level platforms for a stable and access track. No features, deposits or finds of archaeological significance were observed during the groundworks. Those deposits recorded comprised topsoil, clay and gravel from an earlier track surface.
