An early hollow way with Late Saxon and early med domestic and industrial activity was filled and paved in 13th century. The church could be pre-Conquest in origin though first recorded in 1170; it was developed to 15th century, contracted in 16th, and had vaults inserted in 18th-19th destroying nearly all the stratification. The site was bombed in 1940. Good series of pottery from 11th century, coins, animal bones, etc; human bones were reburied without examination.

Rescue archaeology in the Bristol area: 1. Roman, medieval, and later research organized by the City of Bristol Museum and Art Gallery
Nine reports from in and around Bristol. Topics include: an RB altar to Mars from Cadbury Camp, Tickenham (discussed in its Severn Estuary context) by I Burrow and J Bennett; an analysis of 35 skeletons from a sub-Roman cemetery at Portishead (J Rogers); excavations of the 12th century town wall, and of part of the 13th century Bristol bridge and medieval quay (both by R Price); some mid-15th century tiles from Iron Acton similar to the Canynges Pavement (B Williams); and a note on documentary evidence for Bristol potters (R Price). See also P A Rahtz's review of this volume in BARG Review, 1, 1980, 57-8 (Bristol Archaeol Res Group).

The Roman town of Abonae: excavations at Nazareth House, Sea Mills, Bristol, 1972
Julian Bennett
First on site was a poor, ?civilian cremation cemetery, c 75-125; iron nails added to some cremations. Fragmentary timber structures, quarry pits (to AD 150); then irregular inhumations. The site raises new problems about the extent and status of the town, but provides some dietary evidence (animal bones, large quantities of Spanish amphorae).
