A small excavation was carried out in September 2000 on the south side of the Anglo-Saxon chapel, to establish whether the missing south porticus had had a chamber or crypt below it. Ashlar masonry and the bottom course of an east wall confirmed that such a space had indeed been an original part of the building.
The archive contains a detailed explanation of the work, and of some subsequent observations of other parts of the chapel's foundations. Publication references are given. It also contains six files of site drawings and photographs.
The excavation was sponsored by the Trustees of the Chapel of St Laurence to celebrate the millennium of the donation of Bradford to Shaftesbury Abbey.
