Birmingham Archaeology was commissioned, in April 2010, by Benchmark Design & Build LLP to undertake an archaeological watching brief as a condition of planning consent for the demolition of an existing building and the construction of a new dwelling at Netherwood Lodge Farm, Arbour Tree Lane, Chadwick End, Solihull B93 0AZ.
A range of farm buildings partially enclosed by a moat are depicted on the site on the 1889 1st Edition OS map. The recently demolished 19th-century building on the site was probably originally part of this range of buildings. The moat appears to still be in existence at the time of the 1967 OS map. The remains of the moat were probably filled-in, in the following 20 to 30 years. The moat may have enclosed earlier structures and is likely to date to the medieval period.
During the watching brief a brick-lined well and a shallow scoop, which probably date to the 19th century, were recorded. The foundations of the recently demolished 19th-century building were also recorded and these foundations utilised sandstone blocks which may have been reused from earlier buildings on the site. It appears that either the construction of 19th-century building truncated any potential earlier archaeological features or no archaeological features existed at this location within the former moat.
