Introduction

Westbourne Street Link Road, High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. Archaeological Watching Brief (OASIS ID: cotswold2-262685)

An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology during groundworks associated with the development of a new link road between Westbourne Street and West Wycombe Road/Oxford Road, High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire.

Nineteenth-century cartographic sources show a mill at the site. There are also medieval and early post-medieval references to a mill in this approximate location.

The watching brief identified no archaeological remains within the area of observed groundworks. Deep deposits of modern made ground were recorded directly overlying the natural substrate, indicating that the site has undergone extensive ground disturbance. It is probable that this disturbance occurred during the construction and demolition of late 19thcentury housing at the site and the subsequent construction and demolition of a large engineering works. It is highly likely that this ground disturbance has removed any belowground archaeological remains which may once have been present at the site.
