The anti-invasion defences on this small beach, in addition to the 2 pillboxes at either end of the beach, consisted of metal scaffolding poles and mines. In addition to mines in the beach some of the mines were attached to the scaffold poles a few feet above the beach surface. The scaffold poles were set at a 45 degree angle and were designed to damage or sink landing craft at high states of the tide. Any invading forces landing on this beach could cut across the Rame peninsula and attack Plymouth Dockyard from the landward side.
