Hexagonal pillbox defending Hopwas Bridge.

Type 24 pillbox, thin-walled: faces E. Wood-shuttered.

Type 24 pillbox. Concrete-faced. A good, clean example of this pillbox type. It appears to have been built using wood shuttering. There is no external blast wall. It was built to defend Hopwas Bridge, and is set into a bank overlooking the river. [Information from photographs sent by Staffordshire SMR].

Type 24 pillbox set on bank above river plain, facing ENE towards Hopwas Bridge. Splayed embrasures. Internal blast wall. Remnants of wooden gun shelves. Built using vertically-set wooden plank shuttering. Pebbly concrete matrix. Interior access. This pillbox has been preserved as part of new housing development..

Threats Type: Development (Immediate)
Detail: Currently (August 2000) threatened with demolition. Subject of correspondence with Stafford Archaeology and Conservation Officer. DoB recommend it be protected as a good, clean example of a wood-shuttered type 24 pillbox at an important river bridge crossing of a stop line.
