Type 22 pillbox. The pillbox would have defended the W side of the railway bridge that has since been demolished. Now surrounded by trees and largely overgrown with ivy and brambles. Well off the beaten track. Internally good

GHQ Line: Blue - Section of GHQ Stop Line running from near Melksham to Reading. Newbury nodal point - The defences of Newbury on the GHQ Blue Line. The defences were developed as a nodal point because Newbury was considered an important centre of regional road communications (July 1940). During 1941 it was reclassified as a Category B anti-tank island. It is shown as an anti-tank island on the map of the 'Southern Command Home Defence Programme 1940' - PRO WO 199/48. |
