Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation by Geoff Potter of Compass Archaeology, revealed no archaeological features or finds. A single machine trench (10m x 2m) revealed evidence of gravel quarrying that had truncated the natural River Terrace by an estimated two metres below its original surface. This probably took place in the second half of the 19th century after demolition of the properties shown on the 1849 tithe map and during the subsequent housing development. It is likely that the quarrying occupies most of the site area, this is indicated by the subsidence of the adjacent properties and by previous archaeological observations to the south (Compassa1-5435). |
