Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment and walkover survey were undertaken in advance of a new proposed pipeline route from Rake Cottages to Browfield Close, Glenridding. The desk-based assessment found that prior to Greenside Mine coming to the area, the land consisted of mostly arable farmland. Large tracts of this were rented and bought by Greenside Mine in order to provide feed for the horses used at the mine and eventually cottages for the miners were built on some of the land. The walkover survey noted a series of linear earthworks in a field to the west of Tenterhow that appeared to form two rectilinear areas. These earthworks did not correspond with anything on the early Ordnance Survey Maps and could therefore predate the First Edition mapping. An archaeological watching brief was recommended within the field containing the linear earthworks. |
