Abstract:
A magnetometer survey was carried out by Archaeological Surveys Ltd on land to the rear of Avon Mills, Malmesbury, Wiltshire. The magnetometer survey located numerous positive linear, curvilinear, rectilinear and discrete anomalies which relate to cut features with archaeological potential in the southern part of the survey area. These include enclosure ditches with internal features, pit-like features and a possible trackway that may relate to a Romano-British settlement. Roman pottery sherds were visible on the field surface in the vicinity of the anomalies and two Roman brooches are recorded from within the site. In the northern part of the survey area, a series of parallel linear anomalies indicate former ridge and furrow. An irregularly shaped positive linear anomaly may indicate a former quarry edge and this appears to be overlain by the ridge and furrow suggesting it is an early feature.
