Abstract:
A magnetometer survey was carried out at the proposed site of a motorway service station, which lay in an area where a high concentration of cropmarks had been observed during aerial photographic reconnaissance. Sites had included brickwork-pattern and nucleated field systems, double-ditched features, trackways and enclosures. The enclosures which had been excavated had tended to produce finds of late Roman date. The magnetometer survey identified a number of archaeological features, most of which appeared to have been field boundaries, although a sub-rectangular enclosure in the north-eastern part of the site may have been associated with Iron Age or Romano-British settlement. It was concluded that trial trenching might be required prior to development. [Au(adp)]
