Abstract: |
This Archaeological and Cultural Heritage Desk Based Assessment was prepared on behalf of Weardale Railway Community Interest Company in support of a full planning application for a proposed temporary coal disposal site at Wolsingham. The proposal was to provide a coal stocking area and railway transfer point for the onward transfer of coal to the power generation market. The site is located on the outskirts of Wolsingham to the north and east of the River Wear. It is of a linear shape and consists predominantly of railway sidings and derelict buildings. A 0.75km study area was chosen within which no World Heritage Sites, Scheduled Monuments, Registered Parks and Gardens, Registered Battlefields or Registered Common Land were found. To the north-west of the study area lies the Scheduled Monument of Church Walls, a medieval moated manor house. There is one Listed Building abutting the development site: the Grade II Listed Gun Barrel Shed. The centre of Wolsingham is designated as a Conservation Area. There is a history of habitation from the prehistoric period onwards. However, the construction of the steel works and the railway sidings is considered likely to have resulted in significant ground disturbance. Following consultation and a site walkover survey it was recommended that an English Heritage Level 2 survey would be an appropriate level of recording prior to the demolition of non-Listed buidlings within the development site. Recommendations were made for the design of a retaining wall near the Listed Building. |
