Abstract: |
A single trench was excavated as an evaluation prior to the proposed erection of a single dwelling. Evidence for three main phases of activity was recorded. Two parallel ditches and a pit may have represented a primary phase of apparent Romano-British occupation. A third ditch was of similar character and cut to a similar depth but contained some pottery of medieval date. Its physical relationship with these ditches was not observed, but all appeared to have been cut from the same level and may in fact have been contemporary elements of a postulated building. If this was the case, the presence of medieval pottery suggested an alternative interpretation, i.e. that these ditches were the remains of a medieval structure and that the Roman pottery with in their fills was all residual. Two phases of much later activity were also represented. The earliest was a pit or ditch dated by finds to the early 19th century. At a higher level, the remains of a small stone and brick building probably represented an outhouse belonging to a later 19th or early 20th century dwelling - possibly housing a latrine. [Au(adp)] |
