Abstract: |
The first phase of an evaluation was carried out at a site proposed for opencast coal extraction. Previous aerial photographic and geophysical survey and a desk-based assessment of the area had revealed the presence of a number of features within the proposal site. These included the well-documented Roman Ryknield Street, two rectilinear enclosure cropmarks, possible ring ditches, field boundaries and evidence of past mining disturbance. During the evaluation, the Roman road was located and was found to have had two phases of construction. A large boundary ditch was recorded to the west of the road. A circular anomaly to the east was examined, and appeared to represent the remains of a cupola or bloomery furnace in which iron smelting had taken place. Ironstone outcrops were noted in two trenches, and it was clear from the evidence of nearby mining activity that ironworking would have taken place in this landscape. No datable artefacts were recovered during the evaluation, so that precise dating of the features found was not possible. It was concluded that the features were not worthy of preservation in situ, and that further work in this area could be limited to a watching brief during coal extraction. [Au(adp)] |
