Abstract:		 Addyman Archaeology were commissioned to maintain a building recording exercise and archaeological watching brief on all ground breaking works associated with the renovation and partial demolition of the property at 10-15 Princes Street in the centre of Edinburgh. The building, which fronts on to Princes Street to the S and West Register Lane to the E and N, is undergoing conversion for use as a hotel. A detailed map regression undertaken by Andrew Wright showed a series of structures to have existed on site, most of which were removed by the 1920s. The first phase of works by Addyman Archaeology recording the fabric of the building demonstrated the N façade to be the only significant above ground survival from these earlier structures. The watching brief revealed that on the whole the present structure had been deeply terraced into the natural subsoil and directly overlay naturally banded boulder clays. Despite this, architectural fragments from earlier structures were recorded during the demolition works and a well was located during excavation in the interior of the building.
